More Epiphany

The more I use Epiphany, the more I like it. It is fast and lightweight and customisable. The interface is clean and uncluttered and integrated well with Gnome. For example with the RSS Feed plug-in you can subscribe to a feed for a site and have it sent to Liferea. Nice. There is also a great Python shell and API. It also works with my internet banking.

I am led to believe there has been some discussion on various blogs over whether Firefox or Epiphany should be shipped as the default Ubuntu browser. Some have said that Firefox is so popular that people will move to Linux from Windows because of this. I doubt it largely - on the Mac the default browser is Safari. It is in many ways similar to Epiphany. It is lightweight, well designed and integrated tightly with the desktop. There are certain Mac like operations and functionalities that you can do with it, such as dragging and dropping content and so on. You can also get Firefox for OS X, and it is pretty cool. But Safari is such a good browser by comparison that most people stick with it. I think that is the same approach as Ubuntu should take with the browser. It is all about standards implementation, performance and aesthetics that should be the primary benefit a user obtains from a web browser, not what brand of browser it is.
