postgis needs to be packaged for ubuntu. i should read up on packaging here

learn how to do it. give it a trial go before working out how to submit to one of the ubuntu repositories. it will need to have a dependency on postgres obviously!
also i should look at a meta-package for R, postgis, postgres, [...]
